State of Liberland Address: June 2015

Vít Jedlička, President of the Free Republic of Liberland

The nation of Liberland was founded  on the 13th of April to honour the birthday of Thomas Jefferson. Our country was created on what is known as terra nullius – land which no other country claims. We have received statements from Serbia as well as Croatia indirectly confirming this. The Serbian Foreign Ministry sent us a letter stating that Liberland: “ ... is NOT FORMED on the territory of the Republic of Serbia”. Croatia, on the one hand, released a note saying that they did not take our claim to this land seriously, but on the other hand, have placed special police units around the area to prevent access to thousands of people, and to this day dozens have been arrested. But Croatia doesn’t claim our land either. It is not part of Croatia on current maps and according to the Croatian State Surveying Administration it does not lie within Croatia’s borders. Croatia still wrongly believes that the territory of Liberland constitutes a part of Serbia. For this reason, I would like to begin formal discussions on the topic of a border agreement with Croatia. We are sending diplomats from all over the world to help with the promotion of this dialogue and we are bringing this to court. With billions of dollars of investments already pledged from all around the world, I believe that everybody will recognize the benefits that Liberland has to offer to the neighboring region.

Around 330,000 potential citizens have signed up on our website. Out of which, for example, 8,000 come from the United States of America, 5,000 from Russia and another 6,000 from Serbia. At the moment, more than 40,000 fulfill the criteria to become citizens of Liberland. Additionally, I am proud to say that the first citizen of Liberland is a reporter from ‘USA Today’, Eric Lyman. At this time, we only have a little over 100 citizens. These were individuals who were able to significantly contribute to the creation of Liberland. They were also able to find a way to our Base Camp, which is located next to the territory of Liberland, in Serbia. Everybody who applies is welcome to come and get a taste of the freedom that inspires our vision and our goals.

Although some people may think that a voluntary tax zone inside the region will be harmful to the budgets of neighbouring nations,
they tend to forget the enormous business opportunities in these nations, and their ability to generate public revenue. Anyways, anyone can already transfer their businesses to places like Hong Kong or Monaco to avoid paying taxes. That is also the reason why we have relocated all of Liberland’s financial transactions from the Czech Republic to Hong Kong. The problem of today is quite the opposite, however. Many wealthy people receive more money from the state than they pay in taxes. We are building something new, a state based completely on voluntary taxes. It will be a modern way of enabling people to decide through crowd-funding campaigns where their money will be spent, but without coercion. Wouldn’t you like to have that kind of say in your country’s budget?

Foreign Affairs

It has been two months since we founded Liberland and we have already set up fully functional offices in France, Croatia, Serbia, Norway, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Hungary. We have Swiss, Norwegian, German, French, Polish and Spanish political parties supporting us. There are over 3,500 people with diplomatic connections in our database. We are analyzing these connections and starting to take advantage of them. By the end of July, I will have visited the United Kingdom and France; And afterwards, I plan to go on an extended tour around the USA. Once there, I will be speaking at the FreedomFest in Las Vegas, which is one of the most prestigious events of its kind. I have already begun unofficial talks with many politicians as well as various heads of state from all around the world. We’re very excited about these developments. Please follow my diplomatic mission on our news page on the Liberland website.

We have now released a revised version of our Constitution, along with an established basic set of laws. I have decided that Liberland will comply with a number of international treaties that concern human rights and basic international diplomacy. Liberland intends to become a member of the European Free Trade Agreement (EFTA) and the Schengen Zone, which is a free movement area within Europe.

Information technologies

We were able to test our platform which shows our concept of voluntary taxation in practice. We have implemented a state-of-the-art system that now manages the thousands of emails which we receive. We have also released our first version of the land registry system. We’re also working on a social network for applicants and citizens alike which will enable them to follow their citizenship status. We are looking to find a good system to set up websites for all of our embassies. There are still many technological tasks ahead of us to create a country where most of the administration has to be automated.

It is now possible to travel to the Base Camp in Serbia on Ryanair. The flights go from London to Osijek in Croatia, a short distance from our base.
AIR-Liberland has just started direct flights from Prague. Additionally, there are plans for charter buses from Belgrade, Zagreb and Prague by Calypso Tours. These will be fully operational in time for our first big event on July 3rd and 4th to celebrate Liberland’s day of independence. We will have a music stage, along with shops and restaurants for you to enjoy. We will enlarge our fleet of boats, allowing us to accommodate more people for trips to Liberland. There will be entertainment onshore as well as on the water. You are all most welcome to come and enjoy this great event - and to experience the freedom in the air!
